I’ve always found it fascinating how my real-life hobbies sneak their way into my Second Life. Apparently, my avatar has decided that if I spend hours knitting socks or trying not to fall off a paddleboard, she should do the same, but with better posture, perfect lighting, and a well-behaved dog.

🧶 Netflix & Knit, The Second Life Edition
In real life, I’m rarely without a knitting project. Socks, scarves, sweaters, hats, bags… if it can be made from yarn, I’ve probably cast it on, while binging some true crime or Captain Pike on Netflix.
My avatar, however, takes “crafting calm” to a whole new level. She sits serenely in a rocking chair, knitting away, usually while I’m busy Photoshopping or blogging in another window. She’s the ideal multitasker: no dropped stitches, no tangled yarn, and she looks good doing it. Meanwhile, the real me is somewhere under a heap of wool muttering, “Where the heck did I put my 2.5 mm needle?”

🏄♀️ SUP-er Me
One of my favourite summer activities is paddleboarding (or SUP-ing, for the cool kids). Only when it’s warm, mind you, I don’t do all-weather watersports. When it’s really hot, I prefer “accidental falls” on purpose, because that’s how one cools off with dignity.
In Second Life, though, I look amazing. My wetsuit fits flawlessly, I never wobble, and getting on and off the board is a graceful ballet rather than a full-body comedy sketch. Also, there’s no risk of my dogs suddenly deciding they, too, should jump in to “help.”

🐾 Walkies in virtual parks
Speaking of dogs, my two Jack Russells are basically my shadows. We go everywhere: the park, the beach, and long walks by the river (and in case you wonder, yes, at home too. It’s been 10 years since I last went to the bathroom alone…).
In Second Life, I have a Jack Russell in my inventory, ready to join me when I’m exploring a new region. He’s perfectly behaved, never runs off after cats or ducks, and doesn’t roll in questionable substances. He’s basically the dream version of my real-life duo… though he still manages to look smug about it.
So yes, my real-life hobbies have definitely found their pixel-perfect counterparts. The main difference?
In Second Life, I’m calm, coordinated, and photogenic.
In real life, well, let’s just say it’s less elegant, with cinematic realism that often involves lots of barking and dropped stitches.
💬 What about you?
Do your real-life hobbies sneak into your Second Life too, or have you discovered completely new ones in-world? I’d love to hear about the virtual passions you’ve picked up (or perfected); please drop them in the comments below!
