As I mentioned in my last blog post, I recently dipped my toes into the TikTok world by creating an account to share short videos made in Second Life. While TikTok isn’t the best platform for long-form machinima, it’s absolutely perfect for fun, bite-sized clips that can capture attention quickly—just like Instagram/Facebook Reels and YouTube Shorts.

Given that I’ve been sharing YouTube Shorts for a while now, it felt natural to try my hand at TikTok too. And let me tell you, it’s been more fun than I thought!

Luckily you don’t need to install the app on your phone if you’d rather not.
( I don’t have it on my phone). You can manage everything through your browser. All you need is an email address—no phone number is required.

What’s so cool about TikTok? For starters, the videos are short, which means they don’t take forever to produce. The recommended length for a TikTok video is 21-34 seconds, the average attention-span of viewers,  though you can upload videos of maximum 60 minutes.
Warning: there is something addictively satisfying about just scrolling and watching video after video. Before you know it, minutes (or hours) have flown by.

TikTok is also the birthplace of countless trends—whether it’s a catchy dance challenge or a fashion or makeup fad. A lot of these trends translate easily into Second Life!
For example, I recreated a couple of trending videos: one where I showcased various outfits while doing a slow dance to the “Paging Dr. Beat” tune, and another where I danced to “The Spark”, a song by a group of talented 9-year-old Irish kids. Both were a lot of fun and not that hard, to recreate in Second Life.
