Sometimes Second Life hands you an experience that makes you question reality. Not in an existential, “what is the meaning of life?” kind of way, but more in a “why is that whale wearing a house on its head, and why does it somehow work?” kind of way.
Welcome to Visiting A Friend, the newest art installation by the wonderfully imaginative Cica Ghost.
According to the land description:
“Good friends are like stars. You don’t always see them, but you know they are there.”
A lovely sentiment. And fitting, because this entire installation feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket made of childhood memories, happy thoughts and just the right amount of delightful nonsense.
This time, I brought my emotional support Boho Hippo. He’s my occasional travel companion these days. Officially he’s there for emotional stability, but the funny thing is… this place was so cheerful I probably could have left him at home. Don’t tell him I said that.
The moment you arrive you’re greeted by a dreamy landscape beneath a dark, star-filled sky. Normally that combination screams “here comes another moody art installation where I contemplate my life choices.” Instead, Cica somehow turns the darkness into something comforting.
The grass is impossibly green, little birds happily decorate the landscape, colourful balloons float overhead and then… there it is.
A gigantic blue whale. With a tiny red house on its head. Naturally. And somehow your brain immediately accepts this as completely reasonable.
“Yes,” I thought. “Of course the whale lives there. Or perhaps the house lives on the whale. Either way, this checks out.”
Nearby, a cheerful volcano casually erupts glitter instead of molten lava, because apparently health and safety regulations are much more relaxed in Cica’s universe. On the other hand, if all volcanoes erupted glitter we’d probably all complain about having to vacuum more often, but at least geology would be considerably more fabulous.
You’ll find little boats waiting patiently at the shore. Waiting for passengers? Waiting for adventure? Waiting for someone to remember where they left the oars? The installation never explains itself, and that’s exactly its charm. It leaves just enough room for your own imagination to wander.
Like all of Cica Ghost’s work, Visiting A Friend doesn’t try to overwhelm you with complexity. Instead, it gently nudges you into smiling. It contains tiny surprises and whimsical details that makes you stop for a second and appreciate how wonderfully odd creativity can be.
In a virtual world where dragons, spaceships and dancing bananas all coexist, you’d think I’d be difficult to impress these days.
Apparently all it takes is a friendly whale wearing a cottage. Who knew?
If you’ve had one of those days where real life insists on being unnecessarily real, Visiting A Friend is exactly the sort of place worth teleporting to. It’s peaceful without being boring, colourful without becoming chaotic, and optimistic without feeling forced.
Sometimes we all need a reminder that good friends are indeed like stars. And occasionally… they also wear houses.

A joyful little escape that proves once again why Cica Ghost remains one of Second Life’s most consistently magical artists. Go visit, bring a friend (or an emotional support hippo), and don’t ask too many questions. Some whales simply have excellent taste in architecture.
