There is always a slightly confusing period in Second Life when Real Life is still insisting that summer is not quite finished, while Second Life has apparently decided that we have skipped straight through autumn and arrived somewhere between a haunted pumpkin patch and a Victorian cemetery. I can be sitting here thinking about sunshine, beaches and the fact that I really should probably put my summer clothes away at some point, only to log into Second Life and discover that the grid has turned orange, the pumpkins have multiplied, the leaves are falling, and somewhere a skeleton is probably already hanging from somebody’s front porch.
It happens every year, of course, and every year I am still slightly surprised by it.
One minute everything is perfectly normal and the next there are pumpkins everywhere, because apparently Second Life has a very different understanding of the word seasonal. In Real Life, autumn arrives gradually, with a few leaves changing colour and everyone pretending not to notice that the days are getting shorter. In Second Life, autumn arrives like it has kicked down the front door, thrown a bucket of pumpkins into the living room and shouted, “RIGHT, IT’S HALLOWEEN NOW.”
🎃 The pumpkins are sneaking up…
If you are relatively new to Second Life, this is probably the moment when you start wondering whether there is some important seasonal announcement that everybody else received except you. Why are there pumpkins on every destination? Why has your favourite shop suddenly become haunted? Why does your perfectly respectable living room now look strangely incomplete without several candles, a pile of autumn leaves and something vaguely supernatural lurking in the corner?
Don’t worry. You haven’t missed anything. This is simply what happens when Second Life enters its annual Halloween phase.
I actually wrote a survival guide about the phenomenon last year, when I realised that the Great Pumpkin Takeover deserved to be treated as a serious seasonal event in its own right. 🛍️ And then there is the Shop and Hop!
Naturally, once I accepted that Halloween was coming whether I was emotionally prepared for it or not, I decided to have a (preview) look at this year’s Halloween Shop & Hop, which is probably where my carefully constructed plan to remain a sensible adult immediately started to fall apart. I loved seeing it is a completely new build this year, the Moles did a superb job!
The 2026 Halloween Shop & Hop opens to the public on Friday, October 2 at 9 AM PT, and runs all the way through November 1, which sounds like a generous amount of time until you discover just how much there is to see. There are 380 creators spread across 12 regions, with participating stores offering 20% discounts or more, and every store has a free, non-group gift for shoppers.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Free. As in, you don’t even have to join another shopping group.
This is particularly exciting for anyone whose Second Life group list already resembles a historical archive of every event they have ever visited, every store they once bought something from and every group they joined in 2013 because somebody promised there would be a free fatpack if you did. The idea that I can walk into a store, have a look around and pick up a free gift without first negotiating my way through the group-join system is almost suspiciously generous.
And naturally, I immediately started wondering how long it would take before my inventory began to regret this decision.
Because 380 creators is quite a lot of creators.
It is the kind of number that sounds perfectly reasonable when you are reading it in an official announcement, but becomes slightly more intimidating when you imagine yourself actually visiting them. You start with the innocent thought that you will simply have a look around, perhaps pick up a few gifts and see what catches your eye, and before you know it you are standing in a store wearing something you have just tried on, holding a folder full of freebies, while your avatar is surrounded by pumpkins and your teleport history is beginning to resemble a map of North America.

👻 Halloween is also an excuse to be ridiculous
One of the things I enjoy most about Halloween in Second Life is that it gives everyone permission to be completely ridiculous for a while.
Second Life is already a place where you can turn up wearing pretty much anything you want, but Halloween takes that freedom and throws it directly out of the window. Suddenly nobody looks twice if you arrive somewhere dressed as a witch, a vampire, a skeleton or some kind of supernatural creature that seems to have escaped from a film nobody remembers making. Even the people who normally dress very elegantly can suddenly be covered in bats and cobwebs, and somehow this is considered perfectly normal because, well, Halloween.
Personally, I think that is one of the nicest things about it.
There is no need to be sensible, realistic or tasteful when our entire virtual world is busy turning itself into a giant haunted playground. You can go completely over the top, or you can simply enjoy the decorations and atmosphere without changing your avatar at all. There is no Halloween police checking whether you have enough pumpkins, and nobody is going to issue you with a citation because your outfit is insufficiently spooky.
Although I would not put it past Second Life to eventually invent one.
